Occupied, by John Jordan and Glen Neath, uses recordings made at the heart of major protest actions. It includes sound from the UK Uncut occupation of Fortnum and Mason as well as the actual moments when activists decide to make camp outside St Pauls Cathedral.
John, Al and Boz, makers of the programme, were arrested whilst recording inside Fortnums along with 142 others. We all spent the rest of the weekend in police cells and were eventually charged with ‘aggravated trespass’.
Drama and activism meshed together to become indistinguishable from each other.
What started as a play about UK activism also became a play about the making of the play. With recordings of the protests mixed with drama recordings, actual participants mixed with actors, Occupied creates a world of sound that is urgent and original.
Charges were ‘discontinued’ against us but continue against a fairly arbitrarily selected group of activists. The legal process is still ongoing. More here.
