This is immediate radio. Intricately planned but
totally improvised and unrehearsed.
It was broadcast on Resonance FM.
It’s a ripping yarn of love, murder, cannibalism and
hairdressing that tells the ‘true’ story of
Benjamin Barker and Dolly Lansberry, who disappeared in
1998 after a five month rampage of serial murder
and pastry cooking.
Some scenes were recorded on location,
some were performed live, all of them were improvised
and none of them were rehearsed.
No one was harmed during the recording of Crusty Pie.
Listeners may notice uncanny parallels with the story of
the demon barber Sweeney Todd. More disturbing
however is how the stories differ; Sweeney and
Mrs Lovett come to a sticky end, but even to this day,
Benjamin and Dolly are still at large, presumed to
be living in London under assumed identities.
