THE HAMSTER
By Anders Lustgarten
A hamster doubles in weight every week until puberty, after which its rate of growth slows down. But what if it continued to grow at that rate? What if a bunch of people in the West Midlands decided continual growth in hamsters was a good idea?
The Hamster is a dark comedy inspired by an inspired observation, made by Andrew Simms and Viki Johnson of the New Economics Foundation. They likened continual growth of the economy to continual growth in nature and thereby drew attention to the perils – and the surreal nature – of economic growth.
And so our rapacious rodent was born.
